Arrest of military officers signals power shift in Turkey

Saya merasa amat bersyukur bahawa Parti AKP dibawah pimpinan Tayyib Erdogan semakin kukuh memerintah Turki.

Ikutilah berita perkembangan terbaru diTurki...

The arrest of 50 high ranking military commanders in Turkey on February 23 is another sign that the Turkish political and social scene has changed dramatically. The fact that among those arrested are the top Generals including the ex-air force chief Ibrahim Firtina, former navy chief Ozden Ornek and former head of the Istanbul-based First Army, Cetin Dogan, shows that the military junta in Turkey is no longer untouchable. The illegitimate political authority of the military in Turkey is the result of the western imposed socio-political order.

Turkey is one of the most secularized countries in the Muslim world yet it is beginning to break loose from the western imposed political stranglehold. This reflects the unstoppable progress of Islamic revival in region.

In addition to the remarkable political developments in Turkey, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan made a dramatic statement during his state visit to Spain. According to TRT Russia, in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais, Erdogan said “the position expressed during last year’s Davos conference is the key pillar of the Turkish foreign policy.”

Erdogan was referring to his confrontation in Davos with President Shimon Peres of Israel when Erdogan openly condemned zionsit crimes in Gaza. The symbolic confrontation in Davos greatly elevated the status of Erdogan and his country in the wider Muslim world and signaled a major shift in Turkish foreign policy. The fact that Erdogan referred to his courageous act in Davos in explaining Turkey’s new position, shows that the Turkish leadership understands that being an ally of Israel is detrimental to Turkish interests.

The arrest of top military commanders in Turkey with incriminating evidence of planning a military coup will not only strengthen the authority of the ruling party, it will also increase its support among the wider Turkish population.

Turkish people are sick and tired of the military operating above the law. They voted into power a party that stood against all foreign imposed values through the military junta. If the coup plotters are tried and convicted in a fair and just manner, the present government will also win great support among the Kurdish minority as well. The Kurds have suffered great injustices at the hands of the military junta. It seems that the AKP may just have strengthened its chances of leading Turkey for many more years to come.
